Hello! My name is Joelle, a first-generation Californian figure skater and aspiring scientist.
I am interested in understanding what makes humans so special: their brain. I'm curious to dive into the mechanisms behind the mind through computational techniques. What contributes to thought and perception? And how can we use these discoveries to advance human technology and algorithms? How can we further this cycle of progress between the mind, cognition, and technology?
Triton NeuroTech - Co-President
At the intersection of neuroscience and technology lies Triton NeuroTech. We are the two-time, internationally second ranked NeuroTechX affiliated university club in neurotechnology. Our aim to provide access and support to undergraduates interested in this field through hosting workshops, talks, projects, education, and community. And we've been doing so! When I joined the club, there were 2 projects with 20 members. Now we have 200 students signing up for over 10 projects! We've introduced a new education division, and even got to co-host a neurotech conference.
Figure Skating @ UCSD - Team Captain, President
After figure skating my whole life, I was inclined to join UCSD's figure skating club and competition team. There exists a hardworking and supportive community of student athletes who depict discpline and perseverance in all aspects of their lives, from acquiring funding for each competition, to the variety of majors that represent the team's body.
In 2022-2023 season, our team qualified to represent the Pacific Northwestern Conference for the National Intercollegiate Finals.
1 --- LINE-1 Expression in Alzheimer's Disease
How do we quantify transposable elements (TE) in the RNA-Seq data and is there a correlation between high TE expression and neurodegenerative diseases?
2 ---- Hybrid BCI to Play Word Games
Using OpenBCI's Cyton board and EEG cap, we are building a hybrid BCI to play New York Time's Spelling Bee game via classification of visual cortex signals. Can we integrate non-linear prediction models for high accuracy classification?
3 --- Low-Cost EEG Systems
How do we get the best signal quality for cost? Comparing custom-made concentric ring and disc electrodes to research grade electrodes, we intend to benchmark the resolution of our low-cost electrodes.

COGS 189: Introduction to Brain Computer Interfaces - I might be biased but this was lots of fun! Making a BCI is super exciting and even more so during class-time.
CSE 181: Molecular Sequence Analysis - Challenging class with difficult assignments but Prof. Pevnzer is an amazing teacher and it completely changed the way I see and implement graph algorithms.
COGS 107a: Neuroanatomy and Physiology - This class taught me that I really enjoy teaching :)
COGS 107c: Cognitive Neuroscience - I enjoyed learning the connections between cognition and neural systems.
